It was yet another glorious day in the history of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The epoch-making event drew great men and women from all over Nigeria to the largest university in sub-Sahara Africa. I had woken up early that morning to attend the 34th convocation ceremony and award of first degree and other higher degrees to deserving students of ABU, together with my friend Victor; we headed off to the magnificent Mamman Kontagora Square, venue of the convocation.
As we stepped into the arena, I saw thousands of young men and women clad in their graduating gowns beaming with smiles. Immediately, the joy of graduating ignited in my spirit, "one day, I will be dressed in this lovely gown" I muttered. As we took our seats to watch the proceedings of the programme, so many thoughts strolled through my mind and trust me as a writer, I took my pen to scribble down some of my thoughts: "are these thousands of graduate going to join the bandwagon of unemployed youths in our country?" As I behold these giants in their lovely outfits, I commended them in my mind because I know passing through the four walls of a university is not so easy, especially here in ABU where you only graduate after being certified excellent in both character and learning. Out of curiosity, I left my friend where he was seated and walked up to one of the graduating students and asked him a very simple question "after this, what’s next?" I was astonished when for some minutes he was silent to a question I had expected an answer in seconds, his response sent shivers down my spine " my brother, to be honest with you, I don’t know". This made me think of the pitiable state of our nation. "Well it is not his fault" I thought. If only our government could actually assure us of a deserving job after graduation, I know he would not have answered the way he did.
As I walked back to my hostel that day, the same question re echoed in my mind "would these thousands of young minds join the array of unemployment and joblessness that have characterised our teeming populace"? What is actually the future and hope of a Nigerian student who has spent four years or more as the case may be in the university only to graduate and start roaming the street? It’s indeed acrimonious. It is very disheartening that the worst hit of this dreadful syndrome called unemployment is actually the children of the masses. Of all the thousands of graduate from our tertiary institutions every year, only less than five percent actually get good deserving jobs. What’s exactly the future of the Nigerian youth if the government that ought to provide us good jobs fails in their responsibility? Why can’t the so called men in power think of the children of the ordinary Nigerian who after spending their hard earned money on their children expecting returns from their investments only become disappointed and disenchanted at the end of the day? What is then the joy of parenthood when your child cannot take care of you in times of need? The irony of it is that these so called big wigs in government who cannot provide jobs and put food on the table of an ordinary man have their children in the best universities abroad and jobs await them after graduation since they have connections everywhere, this same people are the ones paralyzing our educational sector and not providing the desired jobs for us but takes delight in looting the nations treasury and put them in foreign banks. No wonder somebody said the rich are becoming richer in Nigeria and the poor becoming poorer. This stolen money if put into proper use could actually create more than enough jobs for us after graduation.
The solution to this dreaded monster lies not only in the government but also in us. We must combine our education with productive and creative thinking if we must grow as a country. I feel if the government fails in their duty to employ us, we can actually employ ourselves, this involves adequately engaging and exercising our minds to come up with ideas, which if well utilised will produce wealth and employment. Let us all drop the job seeking mentality (JSM) and adopt the job creating mentality (JCM). Let’s not take our God-given potential to the grave, let us die empty. If we fully utilise our God-given potential, we will not look up to these people for jobs instead they will need our services to run their government. The government should help the youths financially. One seeming truth is that we can actually make our ideas effective only if the financial backing is there.
They should build industries, create good roads, create an environment conducive for business, provide stable power supply and security, this will go a long way to eradicate unemployment and industries will crop up and function effectively.
As I got back to my hostel that day, I became so determined to put my abilities into good use and not wait to get employed by this people. Honestly, I look forward to a Nigeria where there will be so many jobs and few applicants, I look forward to a nation where employers will book for undergraduates before graduation, I look forward to a country where we will all be happy to graduate because job is actually awaiting us after graduation, I look forward to a country where we youths will put our God given abilities and talents into use and not rely on government to put smiles on our faces.

Why are you wearing your ring on the last finger of your hand? This is not a wedding ring; it's a ring which was bought for me by one of the Saudi Arabian princesses and this was for all my goals, my matches H400 to 500 appearances, 150 goals and she bought me a signet ring and presented it to me when we were in Saudi Arabia. People have often asked me, Are you married? Are you not married? They bring out this story and that story. I've always said, 'Your private life is your private life and the only thing in life that you can protect is your private life'. All I can say is I have a private life and I have children. Why are you not wearing your wedding ring?I've never worn a wedding ring. In my life I've never had one. I've never worn one. You find out that most black Europeans don't wear wedding rings. And as a footballer, always I would have problem with my wedding ring. When I first got married, always I would put on my wedding ring and I would have to take it off again because I'm playing football. You are not allowed to wear a ring and because my knuckle is big, it will always be a problem trying to get it off. So after getting married for like six years ago, I never wore one anymore. You will never see any footballers wear wedding rings.Doesn't your wife have a problem with it?Nobody has a problem with it. I didn't mean anybody; I said does your wife not have a problem with it?You said that, but I said nobody. I know what you meant (laugh) but I tried to soften the line there. I don't think she has a problem with it. I'm sure after this period of time I would have known. You seem to like to wearing African print. Who makes them for you?All my clothes are African and they are all designed by one man. His name is Mudi. Mudi is a wonderful Nigerian designer who cut his cloth to suit a tall black man and his colours are unique. I met him three, four years ago. He had nothing then and he came in and he gave me some suits. In the picture you're holding, the suits I'm wearing is Mudi, the shirt also is his. I saw he had an exceptional talent and decided then that if I rise, I must try and make him rise. And he has risen, because from all my shows, deal or no deal, the football challenge, it has always been Mudi; even this I'm wearing now is Mudi.Do you have a fragrance that is known with you?I wear a lot of Arab scents because I'm very influenced by the North. I spend so much of my time in the North. I have families in Jos, Kano, and Kaduna, a lot of Fashanus there, many of them. I've always gone to the Arab countries a lot and I like their perfumes, they're very strong and it stays there, in your skin. This is a country you sweat all the time; you bathe all the time. In England they will teach that you will try out your skin when you keep having baths and showers but here you have no choice, you have to. And I always like to stay fresh, so I wear a lot of Arabic perfumes.Tell us why you never got to play for Nigeria? No, I don't have any regrets not playing for Nigeria because in my heart of hearts I know I tried and tried and tried. That was a very controversial issue because people got it all mixed up and people were saying, Fashanu, he turned down his country. It took me four years to explain to those people who cared to listen, that it was actually me trying to come home. I was invited three times to come back home. Each time I came back home, first time under a coach called Otto Gloria, a Brazilian. I stayed at a place called Games Village in Surulere.Segun Odegbami, the late Muda Lawal, Henry Nwosu, I played with them all. The football I played was totally different; even the coach said, 'afterwards, you might be a star in your own country but over here you're not Playing too well'. In Europe, we play the football in the air, up high. In Nigeria, Africa, South America, the ball is played on the floor, totally different styles. So as much as I wanted to play I didn't fit in for that style. The truth is, for that style, I wasn't good enough. I came the second time, I was benched. I came the third time and I wasn't even benched, they didn't even invite me. My guys in London said, 'John, why are you going back home? Each time you go back to Nigeria you stay for one month, you don't get any salary, you don't get anything at all and when you come back to England, it takes you at least one month to get back in the team again, who loses? You lose!' But in spite of that I still wrote a letter to Westerhoff begging him to put me in the team. I told him I'm one of the top strikers in England which I was at that time, I didn't get a reply. Nine years elapsed, I didn't hear from Nigeria. Then suddenly, Ericsson, the England Manager, saw my team, that day, that year, I was the leading goal scorer, 2nd leading goal scorer in the Premiership with 23goals, an Arsenal player just beat me to it. He said, 'You're are good enough to play for England, and now I'm going to give you an England shirt', It's the highest honour anybody around the world can achieve because you're playing for your adopted country and there it was and as you can see there on the wall, some of the most illustrious England players from Paul Gascoigne to Peter Shilton, the world famous players. That was the biggest day of my life because I played for England. International football standard and domestic standard is a different ball game. Once I put on the white shirt, the uproar started in Nigeria. 'Oh! He turned down his country; he doesn't want to play for Nigeria. It was complete rubbish! It took me time to let everybody understand that, but the whole world now knows that I never turned down my country, I came three times. How will you describe your style?I would say that I was fast, aggressive, and direct. A lot of my goals were scored by my sheer strength and speed. I wasn't a JJ and a JJ is not me. I wasn't a Kanu and Kanu is not me. I remember playing many games with Kanu, Aston Villa and Arsenal and he always used to confuse me because as he comes on I will always greet him as a Nigerian, and he always looked so gangling and so awkward, everything a footballer doesn't look like and five minutes to go, he scores the winning goal. He always used to do it. It actually used to sink my heart when I see him warming up, Arsenal and Aston Villa 2-2, 1-0, he comes on, and he has this funny walk ways, walking gangling like that, and five minutes to go Kanu scores the goal. He always used to do it and we always used to tell each other that if this guy comes on, be careful of him and that's the love and the respect that we've got for ourselves. What outfit do you think you look best in?I think when I stroll down my road with no clothes on, naked, that seems to get a lot of compliments (laughs). I often hear a lot of compliments, they're not nice but it's a lot of compliments (laughs). But if you're saying in clothes-wise seriously, one of the most beautiful ones is a white shirt with Chinese dragon, three dragons on it and Mudi designed that shirt because I'm also a Martial artist. For 16 years, I travelled round the world studying the Martial art and I realised it was better to heal than to destroy and so Mudi did a beautiful shirt for me and that's my favourite shirt. How do you maintain your physique?Let me lie and say, that everyday I run by 6'oclock 5'oclock and I never eat nor drink anything. The truth is born very lucky. God gave me a very good physique and because of my hard work during the years of Martial art, my stretching regimes, my exercises, I came up with, 'Focus on fitness with Fash', a CD tape for women for doing exercises in their houses. A lot of women who are not the right shapes, should we say diplomatically, don't want to go to the gym. Most Nigerian women don't want to go to the gym because most of our African women don't have the time, busy schedules. They've got children and they've got work load. So I say, 'You don't need to go to the gym, just watch the CD and pick three or four that you like. Most women want to get rid of the gut, arm, buttocks, and firm up the breast that's it. Remember, men have a tummy full stop, women have the tummy and they've the gut; so most women want to get rid of the guts and tighten up the tummy, waking up the bum. I'm a physiotherapist; I'm an exercise man; that's what I've done all my life. I'm not saying on the CD, 'Try and look like Fash'. I'm saying that because God has given me that. All I'm saying is, 'These are the ways that you as a woman can change your life. You can change your eating habit, sleeping habits, all other things by going through my fitness tape.' What do you love doing in your free time?Working! My work is my free time. I'm a workaholic. I also travel a lot. In Africa I think there're 53 countries, I have travelled to 48 and in 48, I think have met 27 heads of state. Since I've been back home, I can't even imagine, there is no state that I haven't travelled to. I'm always in Kano, Jos, and Port-Harcourt; tomorrow Saturday I'm going to Abuja. What phrase or adjective describes you?An enigma. I'm somebody who likes to diversify. From football to television, banking, tyre protector, oil business, construction, you have to be able to change; you have to be able to go into other businesses. I enjoy that and I take the example of people like Aliko Dangote, Femi Otedola, Dr Mike Adenuga, they're the real pioneers, I'm just pretending. They're the ones who are going out there and are making it but you know, we are all learning and I'm somebody, I like to learn from people who, should we say my peers? Who would have thought when I came back to Nigeria three years ago, within three years I would now be involved with the bank, not in my wildest dreams in England could I ever own a bank however? Much money you've got, Couldn't happen! Here now, for the first time and I'm enjoying it, my name was cleared by the CBN. I'm a director of a bank and I have equity shares in the bank. Micro financing is the way forward in this country; it's not the big banks. We've got to appreciate it's for the people. I've been very lucky. What's your typical day like?Today Friday, I'm on my way to see some friends in Apapa where I'm going to talk to some of the young prisoners in Kirikiri. My days are crazy; I got in late last night from Port-Harcourt. I'm now in Lagos, and tomorrow Saturday morning, I would go back to Abuja. Then, from there to Kano, Kaduna, Jos and back to Lagos again. It's never ending.

Community Shield: Ferguson admits United’s goal keeping headache From Soccerstar Desk More Stories on This Section
Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he faces a major dilemma over his goalkeeper for Manchester United's Community Shield showdown with Chelsea at Wembley tomorrow. With Edwin van der Sar sidelined for two months after breaking two fingers during the recent Audi Cup in Munich, both Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak are pushing to replace the Dutchman.Foster has most to gain given he is expected to be named in Fabio Capello's England squad for next week's friendly in Holland when it is announced on Saturday. However, Kuszczak is also hoping for a recall to Polish ranks and knows regular first-team action at United is bound to help his cause. Both men figured for 45 minutes in the 2-0 win over Valencia. While Foster did not have much to do in the opening period, Kuszczak made two excellent saves to keep the La Liga outfit at bay after the interval. And now Ferguson must decide who to trust with the role as the Red Devils aim to land their first piece of silverware of the season at Carlo Ancelotti's expense."I do have a decision to make over the goalkeeper for Sunday," reflected Ferguson."Both Ben and Tomasz have outstanding qualities. Tomasz made two great saves, as he did against Boca Juniors, so we will see."The odds remain on Foster getting the nod given Ferguson has already stated his belief that the former Stoke man will have overtaken David James as Capello's first choice by next summer's World Cup in South Africa.Yet the goalkeeping position is not the only one vexing the United boss after suffering a mini-defensive injury crisis.Nemanja Vidic, Wes Brown, Gary Neville and Rafael Da Silva all missed last night's game and have already been ruled out of the Chelsea encounter.Ferguson rates Vidic and Brown as outside bets at best to overcome ankle and thigh problems ahead of the Premier League opener with Birmingham at Old Trafford on August 16.
John O'Shea is pencilled in for an appearance in United's back four alongside Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Jonny Evans this weekend.
Belgian international Ritchie De Laet made an eye-catching contribution to the Valencia victory at right-back, while Northern Ireland Under-21 star Craig Cathcart would also have been picked had he not suffered a minor groin strain in training on Tuesday."We have a group of young players, including Ritchie, Craig, Jonny Evans and Fabio who have ability and are all quick," said Ferguson."It was important for them all to play some part last night."While Ferguson has never treated the Community Shield as anything other than a pre-season game, even though he is bidding for an eighth victory - and his third on the trot - it does provide the first meaningful opportunity to erase the memory of last season's Champions League final defeat to Barcelona. The loss was a comprehensive one and Ferguson has tended to skirt around the issue in assessing the campaign that lies ahead. What the Scot does feel is that United can emerge stronger from the lesson."Adversity is always an important factor in developing and improving," he said."I have always reacted well to adversity over the years and whenever we lose a match I tell my players that the next game is the important one - the match we have to focus on."That has always been the case here at the club."When you lose the last game of the season you have two or three months to reflect on the disappointment."We have not enjoyed that. But we will cope - and we will bounce back."

Don’t camp Eaglets in Qatar…Adejube raises weather alarmBy EMMA NJOKU Saturday, August 1, 2009

More Stories on This Section
Elder Dickson Adejube has cautioned against the choice of Qatar as training camp for Golden Eaglets ahead of the FIFA Under-17 World Championship billed for Nigeria in October. The former Nigeria Football Association (now Federation) board member, who has remained passionate about football matters in the country since the Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima-led board was unceremoniously ousted from the Glasshouse in Abuja, wondered why the nation’s cadet team should train under a very cold weather for a tournament that would be staged in a hot climatic environment."I understand there are plans to camp Golden Eaglets in Qatar for their preparations for the FIFA Under-17 World Championship, the Nigeria 2009. I am not comfortable with that arrangement, because it may turn out to be counter-productive," the retired soldier and referee began in a chat with Saturday Sunsport early in the week."How can a team camp in a country that is very cold to prepare for a championship that will take place in a country that has hot climate? What sort of result do you expect from the team during the World Championship?" he queried."The young players, who are expected to do the nation proud were all virtually selected from the domestic scene. They are used to the tropical weather and now, we are taking them to Qatar where the weather is very cold for them to train ahead of the FIFA Under-17 World Championship, which we are hosting."Tell me, are we hosting to win the tournament or are we just hosting for the sake of hosting a world event?" the former Ondo State Football Association boss wondered.Adejube advised that the proposed campsite in Qatar be shelved to avoid what he predicted as calamity for the nation during the world soccer cadet championship. He went further to suggest that the campsite be shifted to any of the West African nations with similar weather condition as that of Nigeria."I suggest that the campsite for the Golden Eaglets be shifted to any country in the West African region so that the young players will not have problem with the weather condition and concentrate with their preparations for the world championship."If the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) go ahead with the plan to camp the team in Qatar, the boys will have problem trying to acclimatise with the Nigerian weather when they come home for the competition proper," he explained."This is a competition Nigeria has won on three previous occasions. Besides, we are hosting the tournament as defending champions, so it would be very embarrassing if we host and fail to win the event," the former NFA board member stressed. It would be recalled that Adejube had in a recent interview with Saturday Sunsport, raised alarm over the sack of Henry Nwosu as head coach of the Golden Eaglets, arguing that the decision by the nation’s football governing authorities was ill-timed considering the time left before the world cadet championship.Meanwhile, the retired referee and soldier has applauded the decision by the NFF to extend the training tour of the Flying Eagles in Egypt after the recently concluded invitational tournament, where the Nigerian team finished second behind hosts, Egypt.According to him, the decision would further help the Samson Siasia-tutored side to acclimatise more to the Egyptian weather ahead of the FIFA Under-21 World Championship holding in the land of Pharaohs in September."I want to commend the decision of the NFF to extend Flying Eagles stay in Egypt in continuation of their preparations ahead of the junior World Cup in September. It would help the team to acclimatise more to the weather since the same country will host the championship they are preparing for” The former NFA board member reasoned.

NFF May Drop Siasia, Amokachi - Globacom Promises Eaglets N50m
Patrick Ngwaogu, Abuja.
Samson Siasia and Daniel AmokachiTHE tenure of Daniel Amokachi, Samson Siasia and John Obu as national team coaches is being threatened by the ongoing grading of coaches in the country.
Saturday Tribunesports recalls that the NFF had mandated its coaches to undergo grading exercise in order to instil sanity in the coaching profession in the country.
The grading event took place about two weeks ago but none of Amokachi, an assistant to Shaibu Amodu in Super Eagles’coaching crew, Siasia, the chief coach of the national U-20 coach, and Obu, head of Eaglets’ coaches, attended the exercise and were not rated in the grading.
Also missing was Monday Odigie one of the assistants of Obu on the bench of Eaglets. President, NFF, Abdulahi Lulu said in Abuja on Friday that from now on, the Federation would no longer consider non-graded coaches for employment.
While inaugurating the first batch of the Grade A coaches, Lulu described the grading as “historic empowerment” of the country’s coaches, thanking FIFA-CAF instructor, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde, for using international standards for the exercise.
Lulu said the criteria used in grading the coaches include educational qualifications, international national coaching courses attended, playing career and experience in coaching.
Thirty nine coaches were graded as A ratings while Tribunesports Abuja correspondent, Patrick Ngwaogu and 103 others were in Grade B.
Meanwhile, the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria will be N50 million richer if they retain the FIFA U-17 trophy courtesy Globacom.
Globacom, the indigenous telecommunication giant, believes the gesture will spur the country's cadet team to host and retain the FIFA trophy.
On Friday, Chief Operating Officer, Globacom, Mohammed Jameel, also presented a cheque of N3million dollars to the Local Organising Committee, LOC, of the FIFA event called Nigeria 2009 to assist and support the smooth organisation of the event.

The Sept. 14 launch of the new prime-time The Jay Leno Show will not only bring a leaner, meaner host – who recently dropped 12 lbs. – but a hip guest roster of Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West, NBC has announced. The R&B trio – considered the top names in the genre – are scheduled to perform "Run This Town" from Jay-Z's latest album, The Blueprint 3"]. For Rihanna, the appearance will mark one of her first major public performances since the February assault against her by her then-boyfriend, Chris Brown, whose sentencing has been rescheduled for Aug. 27. – Stephen M. R.I.P. Michael Jackson: The Greatest of All Time

It still has not hit me. It feels so strange. Michael Jackson is dead. He was only 50 years old, a milestone age. He just celebrated the 25th anniversary of "Thriller," the best-selling album of all time, and re-released it in February. He was scheduled to start his show run in London in a few weeks.
Maybe Michael's career had reached its peak, but I was not convinced that he was done with music. When he turned 50 last August, I did a series of interviews with radio stations. All of the DJs asked me if I thought Michael Jackson could make a comeback. They wanted to know if he could get past the controversies that dominated his news coverage over the last 10-plus years. My answer was a matter-of-fact "yes."
People often underestimate the power of music, and the effect that it has on us. We sometimes forget how a great song with a feel-good message lifts us up, and makes us smile and remember the place we had the most fun dancing to it and with whom.
Michael Jackson is one of the few artists in the history of the art form to be able to take one song, like "Billie Jean," and reach people of all age groups, races, and nationalities.
Michael has done this time and time again for decades, as both a solo artist and member of The Jackson 5.
This type of legacy cannot be erased by even the most horrible of charges and allegations. His music and performances are historic and forever engrained in our hearts.
Rick Sanchez, a floor manager at the popular Amoeba Music in Hollywood, says that his staff was "equally shocked" when they heard the news of Jackson's passing. "A lot of people are buying his music which usually happens in these situations," Sanchez says, referring to the breaking news of a musician's death.
Sanchez adds that all of Jackson's music always sells well at his location.
Rosemary Jean-Louis, a Michael Jackson fan and blogger from Atlanta, is nervous, hoping the news reports that Jackson has died are not true. "I don't want to believe it because it's Michael Jackson," Jean-Louis says. "He has been the guy considered invincible who always seems to come back. He is only 50. He was on the verge of such a big comeback with his concerts. No matter what he's gone through or what the crazy circumstances and dark period of his life with that poor trial-that taken aside-he is one of the musical geniuses of our times, truly the King of Pop."
I never learned to do his moonwalk dance move, but like everyone else, I was blown away when I saw him unveil it on Motown's famous 25th anniversary TV special in 1984.
I was too shy of a kid to get one of the red-and-black stripped jackets like the one he wore in the "Thriller" video, but I thought it was cool.
I did, however, have an afro Jheri curl in 1979, when Jackson released his album "Off the Wall," which included jams like "Don't Stop ‘til You Get Enough" and "Workin' Day and Night." I was 10, and whenever the high school girls on my block told me that I was cute and looked like Michael Jackson, I blushed and took it as a huge compliment.
My 6 1/2-year-old twins know and love his music as do the rest of us. This will never change.
I know he had been dealing with a lot these last few years. I hope that at the time of his passing he was in a happy place. Reportedly, he had been rehearsing in Los Angeles for the last two months, preparing for his London dates. His 50-year-old life may have been short, but it was impactful. His accomplishments are tremendous.
I offer my sincere condolences to his children, parents, siblings, and other family members, and to his friends and fans.

Michael Jackson, `King of Pop,' dead at 50AP, Jun 26, 2009 12:22 am PDT
Michael Jackson, the "King of Pop" who once moonwalked above the music world, died Thursday as he prepared for a comeback bid to vanquish nightmare years of sexual scandal and financial calamity. He was 50.
Jackson died at UCLA Medical Center after being stricken at his rented home in Holmby Hills. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him at his home for nearly three-quarters of an hour, then rushed him to the hospital, where doctors continued to work on him.
"It is believed he suffered cardiac arrest in his home. However, the cause of his death is unknown until results of the autopsy are known," his brother Jermaine said. Police said they were investigating, standard procedure in high-profile cases.
Jackson's death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.
His 1982 album "Thriller" — which included the blockbuster hits "Beat It," "Billie Jean" and "Thriller" — is the best-selling album of all time, with an estimated 50 million copies sold worldwide.
At the time of his death, Jackson was rehearsing hard for what was to be his greatest comeback: He was scheduled for an unprecedented 50 shows at a London arena, with the first set for July 13.
As word of his death spread, MTV switched its programming to play videos from Jackson's heyday. Radio stations began playing marathons of his hits. Hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital. In New York's Times Square, a low groan went up in the crowd when a screen flashed that Jackson had died, and people began relaying the news to friends by cell phone.
"No joke. King of Pop is no more. Wow," Michael Harris, 36, of New York City, read from a text message a friend had sent him. "It's like when Kennedy was assassinated. I will always remember being in Times Square when Michael Jackson died."
The public first knew him as a boy in the late 1960s, when he was the precocious, spinning lead singer of the Jackson 5, the singing group he formed with his four older brothers out of Gary, Ind. Among their No. 1 hits were "I Want You Back," "ABC" and "I'll Be There."
He was perhaps the most exciting performer of his generation, known for his backward-gliding moonwalk, his feverish, crotch-grabbing dance moves and his high-pitched singing, punctuated with squeals and titters. His single sequined glove, tight, military-style jacket and aviator sunglasses were trademarks, as was his ever-changing, surgically altered appearance.
"For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don't have the words," said Quincy Jones, who produced "Thriller." "He was the consummate entertainer and his contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever. I've lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him."
Jackson ranked alongside Elvis Presley and the Beatles as the biggest pop sensations of all time. He united two of music's biggest names when he was briefly married to Presley's daughter, Lisa Marie, and Jackson's death immediately evoked comparisons to that of Presley himself, who died at age 42 in 1977.
As years went by, Jackson became an increasingly freakish figure — a middle-aged man-child weirdly out of touch with grown-up life. His skin became lighter, his nose narrower, and he spoke in a breathy, girlish voice. He often wore a germ mask while traveling, kept a pet chimpanzee named Bubbles as one of his closest companions, and surrounded himself with children at his Neverland ranch, a storybook playland filled with toys, rides and animals. The tabloids dubbed him "Wacko Jacko."
"It seemed to me that his internal essence was at war with the norms of the world. It's as if he was trying to defy gravity," said Michael Levine, a Hollywood publicist who represented Jackson in the early 1990s. He called Jackson a "disciple of P.T. Barnum" and said the star appeared fragile at the time but was "much more cunning and shrewd about the industry than anyone knew."
Jackson caused a furor in 2002 when he playfully dangled his infant son, Prince Michael II, over a hotel balcony in Berlin while a throng of fans watched from below.
In 2005, he was cleared of charges he molested a 13-year-old cancer survivor at Neverland in 2003. He had been accused of plying the boy with alcohol and groping him, and of engaging in strange and inappropriate behavior with other children.
The case followed years of rumors about Jackson and young boys. In a TV documentary, he acknowledged sharing his bed with children, a practice he described as sweet and not at all sexual.
Despite the acquittal, the lurid allegations that came out in court took a fearsome toll on his career and image, and he fell into serious financial trouble.
Michael Joseph Jackson was born Aug. 29, 1958, in Gary. He was 4 years old when he began singing with his brothers — Marlon, Jermaine, Jackie and Tito — in the Jackson 5. After his early success with bubblegum soul, he struck out on his own, generating innovative, explosive, unstoppable music.
The album "Thriller" alone mixed the dark, serpentine bass and drums and synthesizer approach of "Billie Jean," the grinding Eddie Van Halen solo on "Beat It," and the hiccups and falsettos on "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'."
The peak may have come in 1983, when Motown celebrated its 25th anniversary with an all-star televised concert and Jackson moonwalked off with the show, joining his brothers for a medley of old hits and then leaving them behind with a pointing, crouching, high-kicking, splay-footed, crotch-grabbing run through "Billie Jean."
The audience stood and roared. Jackson raised his fist.
By then he had cemented his place in pop culture. He got the plum Scarecrow role in the 1978 movie musical "The Wiz," a pop-R&B version of "The Wizard of Oz," that starred Diana Ross as Dorothy.
During production of a 1984 Pepsi commercial, Jackson's scalp sustains burns when an explosion sets his hair on fire.
He had strong follow-up albums with 1987's "Bad" and 1991's "Dangerous," but his career began to collapse in 1993 after he was accused of molesting a boy who often stayed at his home. The singer denied any wrongdoing, reached a settlement with the boy's family, reported to be $20 million, and criminal charges were never filed.
Jackson's expressed anger over the allegations on the 1995 album "HIStory," which sold more than 2.4 million copies, but by then, the popularity of Jackson's music was clearly waning, even as public fascination with his increasingly erratic behavior was growing.
Jackson married Lisa Marie Presley in 1994, and they divorced in 1996. Later that year, Jackson married Deborah Rowe, a former nurse for his dermatologist. They had two children together: Michael Joseph Jackson Jr., known as Prince Michael, now 12; and Paris Michael Katherine Jackson, 11. Rowe filed for divorce in 1999.
Jackson also had a third child, Prince Michael II. Now 7, Jackson said the boy nicknamed Blanket as a baby was his biological child born from a surrogate mother.
Cardiac arrest is an abnormal heart rhythm that stops the heart from pumping blood to the body. It can occur after a heart attack or be caused by other heart problems.
Billboard magazine editorial director Bill Werde said Jackson's star power was unmatched. "The world just lost the biggest pop star in history, no matter how you cut it," Werde said. "He's literally the king of pop."
Jackson's 13 No. 1 one hits on the Billboard charts put him behind only Presley, the Beatles and Mariah Carey, Werde said.
"He was on the eve of potentially redeeming his career a little bit," he said. "People might have started to think of him again in a different light."
