Geri Halliwell spotted smoking a cigarette as she takes a stroll with daughter Bluebell
Perhaps it was the stress of organising a birthday party for her three-year-old daughter Bluebell. Because the day after throwing the celebration, Geri Halliwell was spotted taking a stroll while having a crafty cigarette. The singer was spotted puffing away as she took daughter Bluebell for a stroll in her buggy, the day after hosting a third-birthday party for her at their home.
And while Mummy relaxed with her cigarette, Bluebell enjoyed her bottle. ...read

LATEST ALBUM RELEASES

21st Century Breakdown (Reprise)
Californian rockers Green Day fortify their three-chord roots with greater musical adventure on this thrilling sequel to 2004's American Idiot. Spreading 18 new songs across three separate 'acts', the trio hone their flair for theatrics on 21 Guns, a slow-burning ballad, and a title track that blends Who-style harmonies with Queen-like bombast. Singer Billie Joe Armstrong's mini-opera never spirals out of control: Viva La Gloria! is a straight-up, punky anthem while the trio excel on the poppy Last Of The American Girls. ****
Journal For Plague Lovers (Columbia)
AFTER floundering for a decade, the Manics returned to form with 2007's Send Away The Tigers. Their renewed purpose is even more evident now. Using lyrics left behind by ex-guitarist Richey Edwards (who disappeared in 1995), the rockers are robust and urgent on Peeled Apples and All Is Vanity. There are moments of acoustic warmth, too, on Facing Page: Top Left, adorned by gentle piano, and William's Last Words, sung by bassist Nicky Wire. ****
Roadsinger (Island)
This is the second album Yusuf Islam has made since returning to pop three years ago, and the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens is back to his best. The finely-wrought tunes hark back to the Seventies sound of Teaser And The Firecat, while his vocals have lost none of their original warmth. There are modern flourishes, too, on the electric Welcome Home and Everytime I Dream, a brassy soul track. ****
Townes (New West)
Earle believes that the late Townes Van Zandt was 'the best songwriter in the world' and this covers album is an affectionate tribute to the Texan tunesmith, who died in 1997. With help from rock guitarist Tom Morello and Earle's wife, singer Allison Moorer, this is a real labour of love. ****
Notes From The Treehouse (Virgin)
Teenager Alessi Laurent-Marke is part of the new wave of home-grown onewoman bands. But while her peers put a fresh spin on the dreamy, fairytale pop of Kate Bush, Londoner Alessi adds chiming guitars by hooking up with cult American rockers Bright Eyes. The results are highly promising. ****
Quicken The Heart (Warp)
They recorded this third album in the California studio of the late Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro, but North-Eastern quintet Maxïmo Park have kept true to their roots in quirky-jerky British pop. Quicken The Heart rushes by in a crazed blur of staccato guitars and buoyant synths. But the band are at their best when taking a more measured approach on Calm. ***
Primary Colours (XL)
Haystack-haired singer Faris Badwan was in the news for a romantic fling with Peaches Geldof, but this CD finds him returning to music in style. Producer Geoff Barrow, of Portishead fame, brings the best out of Faris's dandyish quintet. Shunning garage-rock, the band are now keenly embracing Sixties psychedelia, the gloomy sounds of Echo & The Bunnymen and the kitsch pop of The Shangri-Las. It's certainly a mixed bag. But, being The Horrors, it's never dull. ***
Sea Sew (Hoop)
A former sidekick of Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan's solo debut puts a new twist on Irish folk music, adding muted horns, strings and jazzy bass to her bright, breezy tunes. She reveals her lilting, Celtic charm on I Don't Know and also delivers a husky cover of Bert Jansch's Courting Blues. But Sea Sew lacks variety, and Splishy Splashy is one of several tracks that lapse into tweeness.**
Outer South (Wichita)
Hot on the heels of last year's first solo album, Bright Eyes frontman Oberst is back with another collection of acoustic rockers and country ballads, complete with Dylan-esque lyrical twists. But, for all his productivity he risks frittering away his capacity for true greatness. The decline of Ryan Adams, another American troubadour who valued quantity over quality, should serve as a warning. **
Sinfonia Concertante, etc. ( Virgin Classics 5 02112 2)
You can play a concerto for two stringed instruments in two ways - going for maximum matching or maximum contrast. French violinist Renaud Capucon and violist Antoine Tamestit take the matching option, feeling there is already contrast between violin and viola. They phrase identically in Mozart's gorgeous Sinfonia Concertante and, with support from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, this is a triumph. ****
