Berclusconi is NOT my father, insists the teenage girl at the centre of his divorce spat

By Mail Foreign Service

A teenage girl has denied being the illegitimate child of Italian Prime Minster Silvio Berlusconi.

Noemi Letizia, 18, has been accused of sparking the divorce of the 72-year-old Premier from wife Veronica Lario which has exploded into a very public row.

Miss Lario announced the split by declaring: 'I cannot be with a man who spends time with under-age women.'

She accused her husband of 'consorting with minors' after he went to Noemi's 18th birthday party and allegedly gave her a gold and diamond necklace.

But despite calling Berlusconi 'Papi', the teenager is adamant he is not her father

Speaking with her parents by her side, she told the Times: 'No, absolutely not. That's my dad, over there.'

Berlusconi says he was at her birthday party by chance because he needed to speak to her father, Benedetto.

How the two men became friends is now also the subject of scrutiny amid apparently different accounts.

The leader originally said they med when Mr Letizia was a driver for former Prime Minister Bettino Craxi but Mr Craxi's son denies this.

When asked by the Tiems, Mr Letizia said the question should in fact be: 'How on Earth does Berlusconi know a man like me?'

Answering his own questions, he will only say: 'We have a good relationship, a relationship of the heart.'

He adds that the friendship was evidence of Berlusconi's ability to get on with his people.

'What is a leader if he doesn't take a coffee with the ordinary man, speak with the butcher or the shopkeeper? Berlusconi is close to the public,' he said.

Neighbours in Portici, south of Naples, where the family live, however, are also baffled at the connection.

Giuseppe Fornino, who manages a model agency on Noemi's street, told the Times: 'She is a pretty girl but one pretty girl out of many. And how many pretty girls get that kind of access to Berlusconi?

'You don't just buzz the Berlusconi button on the intercom and he responds. It doesn't work like that.'

Miss Lario announced just over a week ago that she was divorcing her husband because she was 'fed up seeing him with minors'.

She also suggested he wanted leggy women to stand as MEPs in next month's European elections.

The Italian Premier has demanded an apology from his wife for her comments and declared he may sue her for defamation.

He accused her of faling victim of a 'Left-wing conspiracy'.

But he was left facing further claims of sleazy behaviour after a video emerged of him asking to 'fondle' a woman during a visit to the earthquake-hit region of Italy.

Miss Lario is likely to secure a good piece of the leader's $9billion fortune for their three children in any divorce settlement.
